Explore Folklore & Fore

Upstairs in our beautiful Barrel & Bean Café you will find the ‘Four Panels’ mural by the talented Margaret McKenna!

Fore is surrounded by fascinating legends that give the area a rich and unique character! Featured in the Four Panels are: Queen Maedhb (Maeve), The Children of Lir, Saint Féichín & the famous Seven Wonders of Fore.

It is believed that in the legend of the Táin Bó Cúailgne (cattle raid of Cooley) when Maedhb sought to take the magnificent Brown Bull of Ulster, guarded by Cú Chulainn, Maedhb and her army would have passed through the hinterlands of Fore!

The local Lakeland’s are home to Lough Derravaragh where the famous Irish Legend ‘The Children of Lir’ originated! The story of the four children Fionnuala, Aodh, Fiachra & Conn who were turned into swans by their jealous stepmother Aoife. She condemned the children to a total 900 years as swans. They were finally relieved of their curse in their final 300 years at Inis Glora Co. Mayo at the ring of the church bell!

St. Féichín founded the monastery in Fore in the 7th Century and gave rise to many of the famous Seven Wonders of the area which are: the monastery in the bog, the water that flows uphill, the tree that won’t burn, the water that won’t boil, the anchorite in a stone, the mill without a race and the lintel raised by St. Féichín’s prayers!

Why not spend a day in the legendary Fore & take a tour of Fore Distillery!
